Thaumatrope Project
The objective of the thaumatrope project was to understand the optical phenomenon that is the basis of all animation by creating a two-sided disc called a Thaumatrope. The illusion is created by pulling the rubber bands on either side of the disc taut and twirling them, causing the disc to spin and the separate images on each side to blend together.
In my direction of this project, I chose to use the image of a deer and a deer skull. I printed the two images separately and adhered them together, with one side upside down so that it would appear correctly when performing the illusion.
I liked the simplicity of this project. It was fun to assemble an optical toy and choose the image. I was able to align the two images correctly, but I dislike that I used thick flat rubber bands. Thinner rubber bands would have been much less difficult to twirl. |
