Hand-Cut Screen Print Project
The objective of the Hand-Cut Screen Print project was to effectively use a hand-cut film to print five high quality, one-color screen prints on paper. Emphasis was placed on the complexity of the image and the quality of the screen prints. An emulsion film with plastic backing was used as the stencil, and an exacto-knife was used to cut and lift the film from the image area. Once the film was adhered to the screen, the plastic backing was removed. After the image was masked with tape, the screen was ready for printing. The green emulsion film is pictured to the right, after the image had been completely cut from it.

For the direction of my project, I chose to use a complex image. Images composed of minute details, such as fur, are typically considered complex images. I selected several high-definition images of animals and plants to obtain this complex detail, including dragonflies, cat eyes, flowers, and butterflies. From these images, I chose to use a cat eye. The image I chose had plenty of minute detail, and was easily recognizable.
I liked that the technique was simple and I was able to cut the film so that the image turned out well. I disliked that some pieces of the film were isolated and fell off the plastic backing before I adhered the film to the screen. |
